  15. WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause
  16.      serious, system-wide problems that may require you to
  17.      reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot
  18.      guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of
  19.      Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own

  22. SYMPTOMS

  25. When connecting to a printer in Print Manager, you may receive the
  26. following error message:
  27.  
  28.    Could not connect to the printer: The remote procedure call failed
  29.    and did not execute.
  30.  
  31. CAUSE
  32. =====
  33.  
  34. This error message is caused by the default printer entry in the
  35. Registry database not updating properly if multiple printers have been
  36. added or removed.
  37.  
  38. NOTE: To locate the default printer information in the Registry, use
  39. the Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE) to find the following registry key:
  40.  
  41.    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers
  42.    Default:REG_SZ:\\printer share\printer name
  43.

  47. To eliminate the error message, choose OK in the message box, then
  48. log off and log on to the system.

  53. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1
  54. and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this
  55. problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge
  56. Base as it becomes available.

  61. Steps to Reproduce Problem
  62. --------------------------

  64. 1. Remove all printers from Print Manager by choosing Remove Printer
  65.    from the Printer menu.
  66.  
  67. 2. Log off and log on to the machine.
  68.  
  69. 3. In Print Manager, install a network printer by choosing Connect To
  70.    Printer from the Printer menu.
  71.  
  72. 4. Log off and log on to the machine.
  73.  
  74. 5. Open Print Manager and choose Remove Printer from the Printer menu.
  75.  
  76. 6. Connect to another printer, different from the first printer added
  77.    in step 3.

  79. The above error message will appear.
